| As the weather finally broke, a late change in the fixtures brought Crown Wood CC to the village for our latest battle!
Batting first, Matt Reavey and newly promoted opening partner Dean Munday started brightly as, much like the village hall in the background, foundations were carefully laid!!
Dean, in particular, looked in sparkling form as he set about the Crown Wood attack with 3 fours and a six in quick succession. The highlight being a glorious straight drive into The Squirrel car park!! He was eventually dismissed in the 13th over for 26, as his innings looked like entering an exciting second phase. 43 for 0 soon became 102 for 7 as wickets tumbled. On the way, Matt continued his good form but couldn't quite build the big score the innings needed, dismissed for 33, again playing on. Only Nick Loftus, showing once again his knack for scoring entertaining lower order runs, looked like rescuing us as he lost partners and our ten men were dismissed for 120 - a score that looked a good 50 or so too small. In defence of our total it was clear Penn Street could not afford to allow Crown Wood a start, and we crucially struck through skipper Fletch in the 3rd over to offer much needed hope to our cause. A further wicket in his next over and Fletch was reaching Gas Mark 6. Faced with a spell of such accurate and aggressive bowling, the Crown Wood top order had no answer and soon found themselves in deep trouble at 77 for 6 with a further 44 still needed for victory. Ably supported by Nick Loftus and the constantly improving Grant Henry, Fletch had it seemed, ripped the heart out of Crown Wood as the game sat nervously in the balance. Not so, as it proved. Fletch ran out of overs, finishing with a superb 4 for 16, and Crown Wood steadied themselves to record no further losses and reach our total with plenty of overs and 4 wickets to spare. A gutsy effort then in the end to give ourselves the sniff of victory that never seemed likely at tea. Obvious mention should go to the skipper Fletch for his bowling, but also to youngster Dean Munday for hinting at an exciting future as a PSCC opener with his stylish knock earlier in the day. As we lounged in The Squirrel garden for the post match analysis and reflected on the absence of a saturday win since late April, there was no need to feel too disheartened. Everywhere you looked there were signs of rebuilding! |
