| The annual visit to Windsor Great Park, in view of the castle, produced a game almost worthy of its impressive backdrop. Cranbourne, opting once again for the traditional time format, chose to bat first, and as it turned out, ended up with the lion's share of the overs!! In all we bowled 50 at Cranbourne, including 17 tireless overs from the skipper Fletch, who varied his spell expertly between out and out raw pace, hurried seamers off a half run and even a hint of off spin! His eventual figures of 3-54 did not do justice to his efforts. Backed by a solid, if not spectacular team display in the field; the highlight being a stunning salmon like leap at short leg by Rob Sutherland to grasp a sharp chance; we did reasonably well to restrict Cranbourne to 187 at tea. In reply, we faced a stern challenge. Not only were we unlikely to face as many overs to reach their total, but we had only 10 men to do it with. Matt and Ramps started strongly and looked in little trouble against some good early bowling from Cranbourne's openers. With the first pair seen off and the 20 over cut off only 3 overs away, the situation looked almost ideal for Penn Street. At 71 for 0 and Ramps starting to cut loose, we more than fancied our chances of a target around 100 off the last 20. Then out of nowhere, Tanton got a useful ball to leave Ramps when he was well set at 35, and the sharp chance to slip was held. Another wicket fell soon after, but then in came Rob Sutherland to offer great support to Matt. Together, the pair took the score on with some sweetly timed drives, adding 44 in 8 overs, Matt passing 50 on the way. At this point the win looked back on, but then a collapse of sorts occurred after Rob's dismissal and after the sudden dismissals of Cliff and Fletch, it was left to the juniors to provide support to Matt through to the conclusion. With 35 needed off 2 overs and only 2 wickets left, Penn Street still eyed the victory right down to the point where the win became impossible with 4 balls to go and we had to settle reluctantly for the draw. Matt ended the innings not out on 75 as we finished on 161 off our eventual 41 overs!! But credit should also go to Kelvin Barnett for coming to the crease in a tricky situation with 6 overs to go and seeing it through to the end not out for his team, as Cranbourne crowded the bat. A well fought draw in the end then, but the fact it came as a disappointment said all you needed to know about the positive Penn Street attitude. |
