| A pleasant saturday afternoon in July and bizarrely it felt slightly alien to be playing cricket again after such a depressing layoff due to the weather. Tactically, the toss went to plan and was lost!
After being put in by the Molins skipper, Matt and Ian "Robbo" Robertson got the innings off to a steady enough start against the opening bowlers. Robbo was playing his first game back since the band he drums for, Kaiser Chiefs, had hit fame some four or five years previous. A gap in UK touring had allowed him time for one game against his old favourites Molins (scene of his first PSCC century). Robbo's shock at being plunged in at the deep end, opening, soon passed as he carved 2 early boundaries and looked like he'd never taken the path of rock stardom. "Oh My God!" exclaimed the Molins bowler, predicting a riot as Robbo eyed the Ruby red cherry for one almighty launch into the wood too far and was bowled for 12. Enter Cherriott to team up with Matt and take the score on. Things went to plan until the impressive accuracy and late swing of the Molins new Mayo replacement got to Matt and he offered a sharp chance to a wicketkeeper who barely missed a thing, when on 27! At this point a collapse began to unfold around Chris, who cleverly opted to offer catching practice to Molins' fielders who needed it most and made his way to 26. His luck eventually ran out at the 4th attempt and it appeared at this point our chances of amassing more than 120 had gone. Enter The Davies Family with other ideas. Michael impressed again, but this time it was Sean who seized the moment and struck his first runs for Penn Street with a truly vital 23 that included some masterly World Cup-style improvisation mixed with textbook strokeplay. Somehow we had hauled ourselves up to a total of 152. Enough to give our bowlers real hope of getting us a rare victory on a saturday this year. Not for the first time, Cherriott got us off to the start we needed with a blinding opening spell where he picked up 3 big wickets. Simon Dale looked every inch the opening bowler as he continued his coming of age with another fine spell and one wicket to act as Cherriott's perfect foil. Matt then needed his second pair to continue the good work and cut through the Molins middle order. The trusted Nick Loftus came up trumps again with a crucial 2 for 21 and Hells Bells if Matt Bannister wasn't the answer at the other end with his rejuvenated leg spin proving once again that the road to Bath University is not such a Highway To Hell for his bowling averages with 1 for 2 from 4 overs!! With the departing Payney, went Molins' final hopes of victory, and not even the appearance of Len Hutton (long time hero of Paul Goodchild) at number ten could turn the tide. Sean Davies subsequently chipped in with a late wicket to wrap things up and secure our first saturday win since late April!! Matt Bannister was so overcome with joy, he headed straight to the bar to supersize his advance meal order of Chips, Jacket and Mash amid scenes not witnessed since the "Back In Black" tour! A great win in the end achieved through some gutsy cricket and a solid all-round team effort. For Those About To Rock Worcester.... We Salute You!! |
