The sound of the roller chugging through the village late on a friday morning signifies only one thing - The visit of Kays Cricket Club.

Our Worcester friends from the saturday fixture of tour have quietly become a bogey team of sorts in recent years (both on the pitch and in terms of drinking!), so the PSCC elite needed to be fresh and ready for the fight!! Thankfully, everyone seemed to resist the temptation of a thursday night out beforehand and after winning the toss, we were hopeful of setting a large total with a strong batting line-up.

Truth be told, the story of the Penn Street innings centres around one man's starring role and a slightly disappointing supporting cast! After losing both openers Reavey and Jupp early on, the latter exposing a new phenomenon in the modern game - "Lid Rage" ; Penn Street looked to young Aussie Simon Andrews for salvation! He didn't disappoint!! Mixing maturity for long periods when the Kays bowling absolutely demanded it, with ferocious strokeplay whenever possible, Simon dismantled the Kays attack with a display of batting not seen since ...well.... his previous weeks' hundred!!!!

Kays must've felt what some of us term "The Matt Watt Feeling" - a strong sense of deja vu!! For they were the team on the receiving end of Tim Coombes's historic 206* back in 1988.

At one point, this record looked at threat with the Aussie cutting loose. In the end he fell for 143 with only a couple of overs left in the innings and returned to a rousing reception! En route, both Nick Collison and Mike Ribaudo were the only ones to offer any sort of support, both looking in superb form, before falling when appearing set. Mike in particular worried the residents of Penn Wood View with some huge strikes into the gardens!

At tea then, we contemplated defending 244, an impressive total but one that offered no guarantees against a team of Kays undoubted capabilities. Kays started well enough, reaching 30 fairly easily until Cherriott struck, bowling the Kays opener. Mike Ribaudo continued to steam in from the wood end searching for a wicket when he stuck in a short one and very strange thing occurred. Kays other opener Wyatt, looking like a potential danger man we needed to get, couldn't resist a slash and ballooned a cut straight up in the air heading easily to an area in front of the wicketkeeper and two slips. What should have been a regulation catch turned into a disaster, that had it been filmed, would surely have generated £250 for the fundraising effort through an appearance on 'You've Been Framed'!! Instead of staking a claim for the catch, Masters Crow, Jupp and Reavey froze and collectively adopted an expression best compared to that of a dog that's just been shown a card trick!! Suffice to say, the "catch" went to ground!!

This prompted an uneasy period in the field with questions being asked and words exchanged as to the best way forward. The upside of this was that all the talk fired up Cherriott to such an extent that he decided to take it out on the timbers!! Chris tore in and produced outstanding figures of 4 for 28, backed by Grant Henry, now looking more and more the genuine strike bowler his height and action suggests, with 3 for 36. Matt Bannister, returning to the side fresh from University and bleached in appearance, also CHIPPED in well with some impressive stuff!

The result in the end was emphatic.

We bowled Kays out for just 145 and to top things off, they even bottled The Boat Race challenge in the pub afterwards, preferring instead to stage a giant Squirrel poker game!!!! From a Kays point of view, this proved to be one game at least, where an Aussie didn't emerge triumphant!!

KAYS EVENING FUNDRAISER UPDATE: The evening's events in the pub which involved a raffle and auction, resulted in a superb total of £475 being raised towards club funds. Thankyou to all involved for their generosity and support. Hopefully one of several events to occur this year.
