| .... The morning after the night before - Bamville CC at home on a glorious sunny day that did little to ease thumping heads and dehydration!!
Skipper for the day Rob Sutherland stuck us in and sent out Matt Reavey and Dave Bannister (Welcome back
Dave!!) to get us off to a decent start.
What followed was a slightly edgy, nervous start with runs hardly flowing!! Dave looked his ever dependable self, and Matt threatened at times to get going but looked indecisive. Turns out his indecision had more to do with which ball to be playing at than simple matters of shot selection; such was the effects of the Kays night!! The cautious start that threathened to get going a quarter of the way in, never did sadly, as wickets tumbled and 19 for 0 became a disastrous 37 for 6 with the poor run rate continuing to spiral downhill!! Penn Street then thankfully rallied through Stu Thompson who top scored with 29 but looked set for bigger things as he found his stride with some impressive sweeps and drives. He was unlucky to finally be caught on the Penn Wood boundary when his shot looked bound for six more!! Following this, Pete Lofty, Matt Bannister and Grant Henry all chipped in admirably with lower order runs, but it was Michael Davies who deserved a mention for a gritty knock of great composure that again drew compliments from the opposition and promised much for the future! With only 109 to defend, Penn Street needed a seriously great start to have any chance of successfully defending the low total. This sadly never came! Grant Henry, now opening the bowling after continuing to impress more and more with each game, and Matt Bannister bowled well but could only claim one wicket between them. The stage was then set for debutant Sean Davies, the aforementioned Michael's father, who came on 1st change and bowled a fantastic spell of accurate, testing seam bowling that sadly contained little luck!! Sean deserved much more than his eventual figures of 0 for 17, but truth be told, this wasn't his day! Nor was it Penn Streets!! Pete Lofty showed there was still some fire in the belly with some passionate pleas to the umpire and rallying cries in the field, but ultimately he summed up our frustration at not having put enough runs on the board in the first place!! No notable fightback staged this week then as per the previous saturday against Crown Wood, but a nevertheless enjoyable fixture against a team who clearly play their saturday cricket in the right spirit. Oh, and in case you hadn't heard - the roof's almost up on the village hall!! "Every cloud... and all that"!!!! |
