| Although this match had to be abandoned at the halfway point, it requires a report if only to give mention of the inspired bowling and fielding performance of Damien Ribaudo. Fielding first Penn Street got off to a dream start, especially given the fact we had only nine men!! Damien produced a blistering opening spell of 4-20 in 5 overs, which ripped the heart out of Ashford's top order, leaving them reeling at 55 for 7! Ably supported by Cliff Culbert (2 for 27), we looked like bowling Ashford out for a tiny total until the game turned. Damien was rested (perhaps foolishly!!) after 5 of his 10 overs to allow others to get in on the act. This prompted a massive fightback from Ashford, whose number 9 bat top scored for them!! In partnership with Safin, Kaarim rescued them to 146 for 7 before we eventually bowled them out for 167! There was time for Damien to come back for a second spell, but by now the two had their eye in and although his figures suffered slightly towards the end, he did manage to grab that all important 5th scalp that he richly deserved! His fielding throughout was equally inspired as he threw himself in the way of all that came his way! Mention should also go to debutant Wes Hall (he has to be good with that name!!) who bowled superbly over 10 straight overs for only 19 runs. We just about managed to continue playing in the rain to complete Ashford's 40 overs, but at tea the full monsoon occurred as expected and the game was reluctantly abandoned. Had we let Ashford off the hook when we had the kill in our sights? Would we have been able to chase down a smaller total before the rains came? We'll never know!! |
