Some familiar faces returned to Penn Street for the saturday fixture against Rivetts. As some might remember, five Rivetts players joined forces with Penn Street to help us honour our fixture with Waxlow back in May. We would have to be at our best to beat a side with such a talented mix of young players and old heads!!

As the Rivetts openers took the field to bat, we all knew what Shamas could do from his brief but impress knock back in May. Today, however, he emphasised the point to the extreme with a scintilating knock that really knocked the wind out of our sails over the best part of 30 overs. In the end he was unluckily run out on 94 when he deserved the ton, but this allowed us a slight window back into the game and a chance to keep the total well under the 250 plus, it looked like being with him at the crease.

On the way we suffered a massive blow when Cherriott went to field a ball in the deep and thought he'd try out a new fielding technique he'd been working on which involves cushioning the ball with the left testicle instead of the more tried and tested barrier method. It was soon shown to be a mistake as Chris hit the deck like the victim of a sniper's bullet and in his state of agony almost rolled into the path of oncoming traffic on the boundary edge! Within 5 minutes it was clear Chris would have to leave the field on his swollen spacehopper. This was the last part he was able to play in proceedings, later replaced in the batting order by Mark Lander (thanks Mark!).

The key to us eventually keeping the score to 215 was the ever impressive father and son combination of Sean and Michael Davies. Sean bowled 10 straight overs of his consistently accurate medium pace in the face of some severe hitting, picking up 4 for 45 in the process. Michael supported superbly at the other end at a really tricky time of the game and finished with impressive figures of 2 for 38. At tea we had kept ourselves in the game somehow, although a massive effort was going to be needed to reach the Rivetts total.

Matt Reavey and Dean Munday started brightly and looked untroubled until Dean, looking well set again after an impressive start, was bowled with the score on 40. In came Paul Munday and looked like he was getting set as he and Matt started to forge a useful partnership. Sadly this was broken by a dodgy assurance of a single by the skipper to Paul's original shout of "No" and Paul was run out by a couple of yards. Time for Matt to make amends, which he began to do as the runs flowed more readily and Penn Street edged themselves towards a sniff at least of victory, requiring 92 off the final 11 overs. With the score on 124 for 4 and Matt having just reached his half century, he attempted an even more suicidal run than before with an over enthusiastic 2nd to the fielder with the best arm in the Rivetts team!!

The predictable run out sent Matt packing and left a lot of work for the lower order which proved too much for the ten men of The Street. We eventually ended on 144, a disappointing end after giving ourselves a shot at the chase. En route, Mark Lander gave us a glimpse of what he can do when we can convince him to chuck on the whites, as he swung the bat in vain towards the end. However, Rivetts ran out deserved winners and halted our Saturday momentum after the Molins victory the previous week.

Another enjoyable game though. We look forward to the return of Rivetts in August. Hopefully a certain vice-captain will be fit to vacate his ice bath!!
