On a boiling hot April day, the season got underway with a new fixture against Essex league side Ardleigh Green.
Winning the toss and batting first, Penn Street knew the fixture would probably demand a total well in excess of 200. Sadly, some tight bowling throughout from the Ardleigh attack made this an impossibility. Uncharacteristically, Juppy fell early and it seemed to set the trend for a steady stream of wickets. As he saw various partners come and go, Matt Reavey set his stall out to provide some resistance with a captain's knock and proceeded to bore a garden full of pub-lunchers into checking out the cycle race that threatened to engulf the common!! Along the way he missed several opportunities to part the waves of our cycle-enthusiast "friends", but remained at the crease when Chris Herriott fancied the challenge. As ever, Chris approached the bowling with his trademark "what's all the fuss about?" mentality before falling for an entertaining 20. At this point, Matt needed to take things on, but instead fell for an Atherton-esque 37 to give way to final pair Jack Mendy and Damien Ribaudo. Together, they put on a useful 22 and helped bump a disappointing total up to 159.
In reply, it would be fair to say the Ardleigh batsmen made reasonably light work of the total. Getting off to a blistering start, they smashed 109 off the first 14 overs, before Penn Street, to their credit, dug in and applied some serious pressure with fantastic commitment in the field. The next 7 overs against some top batsmen went for a mere 11 runs and we can take heart from this fightback for future games. Ultimately though, the damage was done and Ardleigh eased to our total with around 13 overs to spare.
All agreed though that Ardleigh as a fixture should be a keeper. A top bunch of lads and plans were made for future games between the two clubs.
