| After yet another downpour of rain on Saturday it was a welcome relief to both the Odney and PSCC players that a game could be started on Sunday. Michael Fish did predict however that there would be a downpour in the afternoon but PSCC trusted their instincts and anyhow Michael Fish doesn’t work for the BBC anymore – so on we went!
Always a welcoming fixture PSCC elected to Bat after skipper for the day Pete Jupp won the toss. Jupp elected to open with himself and Elliot Ketteringham and after over 3 Ketteringham nicked one to the keeper and continued his bad run of form lately with the bat. Enter Nick Collison who after a steady start, began to find his feet. Jupp however was intending to make a big score and after some big hitting was fortunate to be dropped on 25 by the Odney skipper. It must be noted that the young lad bowling Monty Panesar like leg spin was the only threat of the day as Jupp cruised to 70 before the heavens opened its guts over Penn Street – What a surprise! It was decided to have an early tea (to the delight of Collison) with 20 over’s still to be bowled in this forty over love affair (great pop group from the 60’s – Everlasting Love). Jupp as eager as ever was keen to get out and attempt the 206 and was constantly barraged at tea by a disillusioned Aussie who could not believe he was batting at 6 when by his account he should be open for the Australian One Day side (and probably captain too!!). Odney’s skipper was keen to give it a go and so Jupp and Collison attempted to bat in the pouring rain for two more overs before play was abandoned. Jupp 75 not out and Collison 34 not out. It was commented that Tim Coombes may have hired a super hose with a sprinkler the size of a flying saucer to dampen the PSCC spirits and to protect his 206 as Jupp looked blistering and ready to chip away at Tim’s record score for the club.. Was Jupp flat out??? Thanks must go to the Odney guys for giving it a go and we look forward to better weather and a game of cricket on a hard wicket next year – we can only hope! |
