| A cloudy day and even cloudier heads brought the Penn Street Cricket Crew to Cookham Dean for a challenging Sunday fixture.
Thankfully skipper for the day Matt Reavey won the toss and elected to bat and give the side a well earned rest from the previous nights' drinking in London and Revs (Revolutions in Beaconsfield for those not in the know – speak to the Chairman). Matt Reavey and Pete Jupp opened up the innings and once again formed a great partnership with Jupp playing in an angry mode and showing little respect for the Cookham Dean opening bowlers. Both players decided to lose their lids due to the excess sweat of booze, and carve into the Cookham Deam bowlers. Jupp finally succumbed to a good Yorker from Cookhams skipper on 34 and this left Matt Reavey to hold the innings together and rotate strike. Winky, Kinky Winkworth’s stint at the crease was limited as he once again got a golden duck at his favourite ground and thus decided his long career was now over like George Best’s. Goodbye Winky. Enter Chris Herriott who this season has come out with a man who has a specific goal – 1. to throw darts and 2. to hit the ball cleanly and accumulate quick runs. The toddler has done both and played a great knock for 35 in establishing a decent total for Penn Street – Oh yeah Matt Reavey playing a lazy cut shot, closed his innings on 49 – Shame for the CC as he deserved a 50 playing with what I have seen as a monster hangover. Now to the fielding – well what can I say other than “there is life in the old dog” – Yes…..Cliffy "Silver Fox" Culbert produced a master class of slow bowling to dismiss 5 of the Cookham Dean batsmen. On to Birthday boy Nick Loftus who needed looking after by VC Herriott after chucking a few cherries up of his own at Revs and being sent home in a cab – a great early spell of 2 wickets for 28 runs. Well done leopard skin boy!! In the end, what reads as a reasonably comfortable win for PSCC on paper, could have ended up a tight finish. Cookham Dean's last pair required a further 40 for the win, with a full 7 overs in which to do it. With their skipper at the crease and his team's hopes weighing heavily on his shoulders, skipper Matt called upon his trusted ally in many a crisis - Pete Lofty. Pete has developed a knack over the years for useful wickets at opportune moments, and with the first ball of his second over BUTTERed the skipper up with one on the BEAN that drifted away and caught the edge. The result was a spectacular one-handed diving catch by Matt "Prior" Reavey behind the stumps that sealed victory. The team were led in a celebratory bear hug by match-winner Lofty and retired to the relaxed surroundings of the Cookham Dean pavillion to reflect on a return to winning ways and the resurgence of an icon of the silver sheen! |
