The first saturday of the season once again played host to Widmer End.
Fletch won the toss and chose to field, suggesting he was itching to road test his second bout of winter anger management bowling sessions and cement his first game as a Vice Captain with some early Widmer scalps! Instead, however, he chose to hold himself back and looked to a farmer and his goat for early wickets. Mark Townsend and Paul Goodchild steamed into the openers and picked up a wicket apiece for their troubles. Widmer made steady progress, but never really made a partnership take hold of the game as Penn Street picked up wickets at opportune moments. When he finally let himself off his self-imposed leash, Fletch tore into his stride and removed Walters in his first over to announce his arrival. "Show stumps to the Fletch?? - WHAT AN IDEA!!" , remarked a passing villager.
Having said that, Woodbridge guided Widmer through to a useful 205 despite Elmo collecting 2 late wickets including the danger man himself.
So at tea, the game stood nicely in the balance. Would we learn from the previous week or were we staring down the barrel of a 2nd straight defeat? The response was emphatic, as if it was never in doubt!! Juppy and Elmo raced to 98 for 0 inside 15 overs before Elmo fell for a blistering 56 when he must've felt like a ton was on the cards. There was the hint of a collapse at 117 for 3, but, ably supported by Finky, who played just the right support for the occasion, Juppy took us near to victory with a stylish 76 to leave little doubt. Enter the skipper with the knack for finishing run chases - Fletch came in and looked like a man whose pint was getting warm, finishing the game off with a quickfire 24 not out.
We're back on track!! Bring on The Valley Boys!!
