... And so to the away leg of The Presidents' fixture - Briton Ferry Steelworks, but on the other side of the bridge!!
The day started with Damien Ribaudo's match fees going through the roof when he tried to squeeze an ice cream van through the toll booth into Wales and was caught!! The £10 fee, added to his fine for making his friend Hylton sit in the back of a works' van for 3 hours, added up to an expensive sunday for the paceman! Handed the chance to seize the initiative for once against our bogey team, Penn Street missed their opportunity by some distance! Whether it was the over-indulgence at The Crown before the game (Food, not alcohol) or the discovery at lunch that Goody once tried to educate a chicken in Religious Studies, we'll never know. Either way, we fell massively short of the mark with a meagre 113 all out. For his second game in a row, Matt Reavey dropped anchor successfully to a reach a point where 11 yawning welshmen (more if you count the crowd!) were on the verge of submission! However, at a crucial point in the innings with Penn Street at 88 for 3 and Cherriott once more blazing away at the other end, he was dismissed before progressing further. The partnership of 54 which looked promising was broken and it started an almighty collapse. Cherriott followed soon after for an impressive 36, and Grant Henry for an equally entertaining duck! There quickly followed a second duck - that of the Briton Ferry wicketkeeper as he narrowly avoided Grant's violent attempt to demolish the stumps and him with none other than the captain's bat he had asked to borrow!! Fine Number Two!!
The end total never looked enough against the former Welsh league Champions and what followed was on paper just as one-sided. Briton Ferry reached their target inside 23 overs for the loss of just 3 wickets.
However, the scorebook doesn't tell the full story of Penn Street's fielding display. With their backs to the wall, the lads rallied admirably. Damien Ribaudo, Goody and Cherriott picked up a wicket apiece, but Dean Munday undoubtedly stole the show with a fielding display to be proud of. He threw himself in the way of all that came near him and set the tone for us salvaging some pride with sheer effort when defeat was on the cards.
A disappointing performance overall, set up with the bat.
But, as ever, the trip to Wales was another laugh-a-minute, event-filled blast. One thought nags away though - Will we ever beat The Ferry in their own backyard??!
Nick Loftus is taking 2009 availabilities as we speak!
