For one day only, Penn Street became "Rivett Street" as we played host to our good friends Waxlow. Having had a fixture cancelled, and with PSCC struggling to field a full team with a day to go, Rivetts C.C. kindly provided us with 6 players of our eventual 11!!!!

Winning the toss with men down, the Waxlow skipper put us in and Matt Reavey accompanied by new opening partner for the day, Shamas, eased us through to 30 for no loss inside 6 overs. After some fearsome drives, Shamas finally succumbed to the dreaded finger, LBW, for an entertaining 18. This prompted a steady collapse as we soon found ourselves 88 for 8 with almost half our overs left.

Matt then found the support he was looking for from an unlikely source. 14 year old Waqir entered the fray at number 10, started steadily, then proceeded to play the perfect foil to Matt. As the skipper took things on, passing fifty then smashing a six over cow corner into Penn Wood, the possibility of a competitive total looked on! The partnership was broken when Matt, attempting a cover drive, played on for 56 to leave the experienced Mark Travers last in to join the young Waqir. This proved a perfect combination as Mark carefully guided the aptly-named Waqir through as the youngster began to take on the appearance of a young Sachin Tendulkar laying into the Waxlow bowling as he took the lead. Only some slight over-enthusiasm on his part could bring his downfall as he was eventually stumped with the score on 154. The last wicket pair had provided our highest partnership, with a superb 36.

In reply, Waxlow started well, though reigned in slightly from their usual explosive start by Travers and Aamer who bowled well on their guest debuts. After 10 overs the score stood at 50-2 and the game reasonably well-balanced. The change in bowling brought a steady acceleration though and Waxlow eventually raced to the target in just 23 overs.

In the end then, the combined forces of Rivetts and Penn Street had put up an admirable fight, but to no avail against the mighty Waxlow!

Our younger players can take encouragement from some hefty compliments that came their way after the game from the Waxlow players. Grant Henry, Michael Davies and Kelvin Barnett were all singled out as players with bright futures by the opposition.

Massive thanks must go to Rivetts for helping us out in such a huge way and ultimately saving a fixture that had been lost to rain the year before.

Once again, Waxlow reminded us why we enjoy playing them so much. A top bunch of blokes and cricketers...........

......... would still be nice to beat them one year soon though!!!!
