| After another week's delay through rain, another time game to follow Knotty Green! Penn Street again batted first and faired a whole lot better than the previous week!! Again we lost Pete Jupp early on after he fell to another useful delivery, but what followed was some determined batting on a pitch that offered a little to the bowlers and wasn't quite coming on if you viewed it as a batsman. Matt looked scatchy early on but battled hard to offer support to Elliot Ketteringham who was clearly in the sort of form that meant he was finding things a whole lot easier at his end! In all, the Penn Street innings was built around Elliot's immense knock - his first hundred for Penn Street - which featured some glorious straight hitting and six sixes. Matt eventually fell lbw for 39 after finally getting going. The partnership was worth 94 in the end and despite quickly losing Dean Munday soon after, Penn Street were well set for an onslaught in the final overs with Elliot still there and Matt Bannister intent on continuing his good form. By the time Elliot fell for a glorious 115, Matt Bannister was getting going and Fletch looked just as angry as he did at Knotty Green. Together they made the bowlers suffer in the final few overs before tea. In particular, Fletch smashed 2 sixes and a four off the last over before rotating strike to allow Matt to get in on the act and loft a fantastic straight six into The Squirrel garden off the last ball before tea. We ended on 239 for 4. A more than competitive total. Matt Bannister fell unluckily short of a richly deserved fifty on 44* and Fletch ended with 31* off just 16 balls. In reply, we got off to a great start through Jack Mendy who again looked sharp and grasped a sharp caught and bowled smashed back to him in his 3rd over. The downside of this was in doing so, Jack damaged his finger so bad he couldn't play any further part in the game! Fletch took over to support Goody at the other end, returning after a long lay off spent growing his hair like Ryan Sidebottom and inspiring us on tour (with a little help from Rob Sutherland) to win a pub quiz!! Together they toiled away, largely fruitlessly. Goody shocked us all with a rare caught and bowled on the way! - an event that comes around about as often as a pub quiz on tour!!!! Fletch was unlucky to remain wicketless after a 9 over spell that deserved more. In the battle of the club's premier spinners, experience faired better on this occasion as Cliffy picked up 2 for 15 in a useful 5 over spell. Matty Bannister suffered slightly at the hands of a Wayfarers middle order that, full credit to them, still batted like it had intentions of victory despite the tall order of the run rate required from the remaining overs. Goody also had a final word with a late wicket to get Wayfarers to 6 down and end with figures of 2 for 40, but the opposition continued to play their shots and finished on a useful 186 for 6. A total that looked even better when you consider that due to the chosen time format, it only allowed them time for 36 overs in reply! Match drawn. An enjoyable game against a friendly and good-spirited opposition in Harrow Wayfarers. We look forward to further contests. |
