| As the great early season weather continued to shock, Penn Street played host to another new side - Chiswick & Latymer. Desperate to string a run of results together to take on last years momentum, it was a relief, truth be told, when the opposition skipper elected to bat. With some uncertainty as to how the new strip would play, Penn Street fancied their chances of taking early wickets as pacemen Chris Fletcher and Damien Ribaudo unleashed their fury! Damien in particular deserves mention for a blistering spell that could quite easily have brought him a 5 for! His eventual figures of 2 for 9 from 10 overs don't give mention of the 2 dropped slip chances involving a certain skipper way out of position at first slip!! Further wickets came with 1 apiece for Fletcher, Mike Ribaudo (switching between wicketkeeping and bowling duties) and Simon Dale with his new "rock star barnet" reminding a few of us of a young Malcolm Bate! We also welcomed back into the fold Kelvin Barnett after a lengthy spell out with a leg injury. Also in the side, playing his first game for us and making up a trio of Ribaudos, was Chris "Punter" Ribaudo ("Ricky" to some!) who took time out from signing Juppy's cricket equipment to grab a wicket in his very first over for the club. A good performance from the team restricted Chiswick to a reasonable total of 150 that looked unlikely at the halfway stage after their shaky start. The feeling at tea was this was a total easily within our grasp if we could get off to a good start and build some decent partnerships. The wicket, all told, played fairly consistently throughout and Juppy and Matt seized the early initiative in reply with 46 in the first 7 overs. In the end, we breezed to the total with over 17 overs to spare without losing a wicket. With some controlled and selective straight hitting, Juppy raced to a fifty, pausing unselfishly on route to his 90* to allow Matt to make it through to 50 and convert some decent starts in previous weeks into a more significant knock. Two wins now against those two losses. The balanced is restored. Wembley here we come! |
